The Stakes

Every agency hits the same wall. Work arrives faster than you can staff it, and the options are all bad: turn it away, stretch a junior past their depth, or make a full-time senior hire for a demand curve that will not hold. In-house teams hit a quieter version of the same thing. They need senior judgment on the big calls, but not enough of it to justify a director's salary. Both problems have the same shape. You need senior hands some of the time, not all of it.

For Agencies

How it works

  • Fit call. A short conversation about the work, the team, and the gap a senior partner would fill. No commitment.
  • Scope and shape. Monthly hours, cadence, and how we communicate. Most engagements settle between 20 and 60 hours a month.
  • Embed. A short onboarding to get up to speed on the brand, the team, and the calendar. After that, I operate as part of the team.
  • Review and evolve. A regular check-in to scope up, scope down, or shift with where the work is going.

The longer the term, the better the rate

One-off overflow is billed at the standard project rate. Committed, ongoing capacity is not. The more hours you reserve and the longer the term, the lower the effective rate, with retained engagements landing up to 20% below project pricing. The exact number is a conversation, not a rate card, because it moves with volume and commitment. That is the point. Commit more, pay less per hour, and both sides plan the year instead of the week.

Availability is limited by design

Embedded work only scales so far before the standard slips, so the calendar holds a fixed number of engagements. Right now that is three agencies and two retained businesses. As the roster fills, lead times stretch and flexibility tightens. If the timing matters, the conversation is worth having sooner rather than later.

Confidentiality

Confidential by default. I present as your team, as Serif + Gold, or invisibly, whatever the relationship needs. Nothing from the work goes public, in a portfolio or anywhere else, without asking you first.

Who it's not for

A one-off task with no interest in an ongoing relationship. This is reserved capacity and senior judgment over time, not a quick pair of hands for an afternoon. If that is all you need, a freelance marketplace will be faster and cheaper, and I will say so.
